When we think of Queen Victoria, whose reign eclipsed that of every British king and queen before her, we imagine the Widow of Windsor, reclusive in her palace, draped in permanent mourning for her beloved husband, Albert, the Prince Consort, who died in 1861. But this book takes the listener on a journey that starts before her marriage, before she came to be seen as the static icon of the age that bears her name.

From her isolated childhood at Kensington Palace, where her daily life was controlled by a man who plotted to one day seize power through her, Victoria emerged shortly after her 18th birthday as a fully-fledged queen, a young woman who gloried in her newfound power and freedom. Over the next 20 years, she fell in love - twice, if the rumors are to be believed - bore nine children, and kept a daily diary which recorded her private, inward struggles how to reconcile her role as monarch with her duties as a wife and mother, how to protect her country and her throne in an age of revolution. Ultimately, listeners of this book will discover how Queen Victoria redefined the monarchy for her own age - and afterwards.

Well, it is a stand alone read but not so sure about the HEA. Of course, it wasn't a romance novel either. I thought it was quite interesting as it took a child born to royalty and gives a bird's eye view into what their life is really like. I'm not so sure it was a life of privilege. It is sort of sad in a way that their life is not their own but belongs to a line that determines what and how they think, live, and die.

Even her own mother seemed helpless to mold and shape the life of her daughter. It was left up to a man that had his own best interest at heart. It is great that she determined early on that he would not control and rule her as well as her country. As protected and sheltered as she was, she was still a victim of other's wanting to put their own agenda first. She had no desire to marry until she saw her cousin Albert as a young adult. Then she fancied herself in love and wanted to push the idea of a marriage. It is said that Albert was not as in love with her and she was in love with him at first. However, they seemed to have made 9 children in a short period of time.

The story takes you through the years she spent with Albert and several events in history. I thought it was a very interesting book and I learned a lot about the royal families and the problems they faced. I really don't think I would have wanted to trade places with any of them. To have only one life and to have to live it being dictated to by government and family would be difficult. I would definitely recommend the story if you are a history buff.

I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 10/20/17

Queen Victoria Icon of an Era (Audible Audio Edition) Michael W Simmons Alan Munro Make Profits Easy LLC Books Reviews

Different perspective from the traditional view of QV. Mostly about the early years of her reign. Very interesting. Moves along.
A poignant adaptation of her diaries. Giving the reader a glimpse of life and the conflicts of being a Queen and woman in 1800's England.
Loved this book and this subject. Well written and will continue to read this author. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Victoria's story.
Great book
The length of Victoria's reign contributed to complexities, many of which were beyond her control. At its beginning she was a woman of power in a society which didn't condone such. The fact that she forged a way showed her strength. The second half of her life was sad
One wonders what it could have been if Albert had grown old with her.
I enjoyed the book and would recommend it as an informative and relaxing read. I was actually looking for a book that talked about her entire reign however. Romantic as I am, I was wanting to see here as the whole woman to the end of her reign and it wasn’t really made clear that it was covering the more currently trendy cultural affair with her and her Prince. Yes, I love a good love story and they did well but all of those years before Albert’s death certainly impacted the woman and the Queen she ultimately became. Now I gotta go find another book. (So sad) But take a chance on it; it’s quite a good read.
Queen Victoria is the longest-standing person in the English throne after the current queen Elizabeth. Interestingly, in those days the British people were more interested in the sect of the king's or queen's spouse rather than their nationalities. A person from a different sect was not accepted in any way. Therefore, the queen had not much choice for marriage.

What remained in my mind from the book
- The queen was raised under unnecessary strict discipline.
- She was half German.
- She married to her German cousin.
- She had her first child eight months after marriage which may mean she had been together with her husband before marriage.
-She had nine children.
-Some of her children and grandchildren were married to people from other royal families.
-Christal Palace was built with the efforts of the Quenn's husband Albert. This seemed to be his biggest achievement.

I couldn't get much information about the Great Britain's acquisitions, poitical climate and technological and economic developments in this country during the Victoria era. The author had been mostly focused on the Queen's personal life.
